End of an Era, Walking down the Aisle, Walking together

I just got a notice yesterday from a dear friend that I grew up with. He and his wife had a baby. It was a long circuitous journey for them and I am so very happy for them. My prayers have been with them in this for years and God answered. The irony too has not escaped me. Jonathan, our oldest graduates from High School today. As one family begins a new journey with a child so we are coming toward the end of childhood with one of our own and moving on to a new relationship. We are so proud of him and look forward to a new way of associating with the young adult in our midst.

  • Roy had the special privilege of walking former student from Vietnam Tina down the aisle as a proxy for her parents at her wedding to John last week. It was a special wedding where ISI people and friends from all over contributed much to make this a special afternoon for her. Roy taught her how to drive when she was studying at UTA, and while she was already a believer when she came, he was able to connect her with the ISI group at Richland college where she grew much and I believe met John.

  • Roy was able to use his Japanese skills and “walk together” with Indian “Sylvan” when they picked up a Japanese student and an Indian student from the airport on two separate occasions last week. The Japanese student spoke little English but a couple of Japanese students were able to help him and “Sylvan” helped the Indian student get settled into UTA. God is showing us how important it is to bring students along side in all matters to allow them to see models of what it means to live in God’s kingdom.
  • “Sylvan” recorded his testimony for his baptism. It was a blessing to see him share about his life and how God has changed him.  God is clearly working in his life. “Sylvan” also got acceptance into one school for the fall and he seems determined to use this as an opportunity to learn and grow.
  • Roy’s parents are here this week. It is a blessing to work together on projects and share life together. They are here for Jonathan’s graduation. On a different note, while Jonathan has committed himself to go to UT Arlington as they have lavished him with scholarships, and a big welcome mat. Yesterday, we got a simple e-mail from UT Austin, the premiere Texas university, that he got in. In talking about this he said he was committed to UTA. I was proud of his attitude in terms of keeping his word to UTA. We are also blessed as Roy’s parents gave us a new van to use to replace our old one in ministry.
