Sharing Christ's Love with International Students in North Texas

Catching up to everyone with the Fall Newsletter! It Wouldn’t be Fall

ISI Dallas/Fort Worth, ISI UTA

Hi everyone. Here are some exerpts from our newsletter summarizing all that happened in the fall so far…

It Wouldn’t be Fall Without a Trip to the Houston Space Center

(See PicturesWaiting for the NASA Space Center TourThe Houston Space Center Trip is always popular with students. When else can you get transportation to Houston (about 5 hours south of us), a ticket to tour the NASA Space Center, the chance to meet a real astronaut who has been in space 7 times, the chance to stay with an American host family and enjoy going to an American church with them, and experience the famed Kemah Boardwalk on the Texas Gulf Coast, all for under $40? With ISI, that’s who!

Students with Astronaut Jerry RossThis year Roy, together with about 50 other students, drove our bright blue Astro minivan filled with guys from Japan, Brazil, and India. The conversation down and back was lively to say the least. They got to stay at an Roy with students at host family homeincredible home and receive first-rate hospitality from the Gordon family, thanks to the hard work of our colleague Jeff Newpher, who coordinates all the host homes down in Houston for us. What a great opportunity for us to build relationships with students! Many of these guys also are attending our Friday night fellowship group.

AnchorFriday Night Fellowship—Two Groups/One Mission!

(see Pictures) At the beginning of this year, we split into two Friday Night Fellowship groups. Their names are interesting: Starbucks and Planetarium. You may wonder how they got these unusual names. It is really just where we pick the students up each week. Our group picks up at the Starbucks on campus, and the other group picks up at the UTA Planetarium. Both groups average about 30 students/volunteers each week.

We enjoy a great meal together, have an introduction time, play some fun games or sing together, then allow students to choose a Bible Discovery group or an English Conversation group.  After the groups, we come together for dessert and fellowship. During the introduction time we have started asking students if they have prayer requests. One young man (Hindu background) has a new prayer request every week. The exciting thing is that God has been answering these prayers. Pray that students will continue to see the power of God as they bring their requests to Him. God is showing that He answers prayer.

In the Bible Discovery group, we are using the M:28 Bible Study format. After we share things that we are thankful for and that are stressing us out and discuss how the group can help each other, we read through a carefully selected passage a couple of times and summarize it in our own words. Then we answer questions such as these: What does this passage teach us about God? What does it teach us about people? Is there anything in this passage that you find significant? And most importantly, if this passage is true, how does it change the way you live? In our group, we have some students learning the Bible for the first time. It is exciting to watch God reveal Himself to them through His Word! Pray that these newcomers would continue to pursue the M:28 Bible Study.
